How To Paint A Cactus // For Beginner Artists // With Acrylic Paints
In this tutorial you will learn how to paint a very basic cactus. This is perfect for beginner artists looking for a place to start!I included the video tutorial at the bottom, and pictures for those who are more visual learners.
This is a super easy painting, and I know you can paint this yourself. All you have to do is relax and have fun. You got this!
Materials Needed:
- Acrylic Paints
- Paint Brushes
- Water
- Canvas
- Paint Markers
STEP ONE: Sketch Out The Cactus
The first step is to sketch out where you want your cactus positioned and how you want your cactus to look.
Get creative with this part!
There is no need to paint the exact same thing I did (although you are certainly welcome to). You can change up the colors, the shape of the pot, and even the shape of your cactus into anything you want! It’s totally up to you!
STEP TWO: Paint The Background
Step two is to paint in the background. I chose a bright pink for mine, but again you can change it up and pick whatever you want!
Make sure to avoid brush strokes!
The easiest way to do this is add multiple coats of paint. Another tip is to choose one direction to have your brush strokes run.
I would recommend either a vertical or horizontal direction.
STEP THREE: Paint In The Plant Sections
This part is all about blending!
In order to paint your cactus, you are going to need to use different shades of green to show definition between the differing sections.
I also chose to use a yellow, because it adds a bit of an extra highlight to the cactus.
STEP FOUR: Paint The Pot
The next step is to paint the pot. I did this with an orange color, but you can always choose a different one if you want.
I used black paint and the same pink as the background to add shadowing, and break the pot up a bit. I also added a shadow to the ‘ground’ to break up the background.
Step Five: Add In Final Details
The last thing to do is take your paint markers (or Sharpies) and add in an outline and some other details.
I used a black marker to outline the cactus, and the white marker to add in the cactus spikes plus a highlight in the pot.
